Description

My application for :iconworldtrain: I've been eyeing it since before its very first opening but then final exams then National Exams then graduation then uni happened (and the last is still happening). Hence the (subtle?) style differences between the full-body and headshot drawings. I hope it's okay-

January 11, 2016: Stats, age, and height/weight update.
August 24, 2014: Added a rough voice reference and a new miscellaneous fact.
July 22, 2014: App revamp! (Yes, finally, I know.)

Place of birth: Ashford, Kent, England

Height: 5' 8.9"/175 cm (HE KEEPS GROWING)
Weight: 121.25 lbs/55 kg

Family: Parents (Daniel and Katherine Edwards), sort-of-adoptive-father-slash-mentor (Ajax)

Creature: Human
Dimension: Earth (as told in the Storyline journal--he boarded the Train in February 2043)

Stats:
» Health 420
» Magic 280
» Attack 300
» Defense 180
» Speed 850

Voice: Roughly like Donatello's (from the 2014 TMNT film) voice. I also think of a minor character's (Bill Murphy) voice in Meitantei Conan's 2014 film, but I can't quite find an online reference for that one. :T Basically, his voice is light/rather high in pitch/child-like. It's not gonna get deeper as he ages, nope.

Personality:
Lyle is normally a placid fellow. Give him something to fix or show him an interesting machine though, and he'll be the most excited you can ever see him. That, or treat machines wrongly in his vicinity--he'll be giving you death threats in an instant. Otherwise, he is unimpressed with everything 90% of the time. Having someone interfering with his work or disturbing him when he's concentrating is his biggest pet peeve, of which a certain cat is often guilty of.

He doesn't advertise it, but favours are his personal currency; if you ever do something that helps him, he will even swallow his hatred of you and pay back his debt should you ever need it. Brief and to the point in his social interactions, Lyle doesn't endear himself to most people. Unless you share his admittedly limited interests (or torture machines in your spare time), he doesn't care.

Valuing freedom above all else but his obsession with machinery, Lyle doesn't respond well to being ordered around. Naturally, he prefers not to be tied to any person or rules. It doesn't mean you can't get close to him, you just need more time (and patience, lots of it; he often chooses machines over people). His love for freedom is part of why he loves exploring places--to him, exploration is a way of exerting his freedom.

Due to his practical nature, Lyle takes things as they are; as facts instead of one possibility among many: he doesn't waste his time on what-ifs and could-have-beens. This makes him unlikely to drown in angst, but also blinds him from possibilities--especially in relationships.

The best way to describe his morality is "blue and orange": it's so out of sync with the rest of the world it's not even on the same black-white, bad-good spectrum as everyone else's. Whether this caused or was caused by his relationship with his parents if up for debate.

TL;DR: Lyle is unimpressed 90% of the time, thinks of favours as a currency, loves machines and freedom, is practical, and has a blue-orange morality.

History:
Lyle's family is one of the wealthiest in the town where he was born and raised. Growing up, Lyle was often brought to social and business meetings his parents attended and made to sit still with nothing to do. He couldn't stand it, so he often wreaked a havoc or sneaked away, earning him the reputation of being a difficult child.

The times he sneaked away from home, either his parents found him and took him home or he became overwhelmed by the smells in the outside world then came home by himself. Little Lyle was also known for dismantling various machines and electronic appliances that, upon reassembling, would not work properly. Everybody came to the logical conclusion that Lyle broke those things, despite his protests that they were already broken before he had taken them apart and he was just trying to see what was wrong so he could fix it.

Thinking maybe someone else could change Lyle's exasperating behaviour, his parents sent him to a boarding school. With a lot of things he could do and plenty opportunities to explore the expansive school grounds, Lyle no longer rebelled as much as he had back home. There, his obsession with machines and electronics grew. There were many kinds of devices he hadn't seen at home, and consequently Lyle was often caught dismantling school's properties. He was also occasionally seen with another boy's phone on him. Most of the boys whose phones were "borrowed" didn't complain, as their phones were already starting to malfunction before Lyle got his hands on them. After a while, Lyle was known school-wide as the electronic maniac.

Sticking out like a sore thumb with his oversensitive sense of smell and machine geekery, Lyle had his fair share of bullying. However, he was not one to acquiesce to abuse; he always made sure those who bullied him suffer (an equivalent amount of suffering, of course. Based on Lyle's standards, that is). On the other hand, there were kids who thought he was cool, and an older boy even introduced him to what's best called a young mechanics' association. Aside from learning about machines and electronics deeper, Lyle also learned that using favours as a currency was very, very beneficial.

An offhand remark that it must be magic Lyle was an uncannily fast learner when it came to machines ended up being a serious theory as to why he could tell whether something's out of order with a mechanical or electronic device. The hustle-bustle over discovery and latter ban of magic use on Earth still fresh in his mind, Lyle was horrified. If it were true (and it made too much sense not to be), he had been using magic all his life unknowingly and worse, he couldn't stop himself from doing so because it was as natural to him as breathing (not that he wanted to). It also raised the question how he could actively and consciously utilise magic; he didn't dare try because use of magic was banned, but it was possible that he had done it at one point or another without anyone noticing. His magic use wasn't apparent to anyone who wasn't looking closely, but as much as he despised authority, Lyle didn't want to take chances. He didn't want to live under laws that were restricting him that much, anyway. Thus he began seeking for a way out, as discretely as possible.

One day, gossips of a transdimensional train making a stop on Earth reached Lyle's ears. The only thing stopping him from running to find it right then was the insistence of his friends from the association that he actually know how to survive on his own before leaving. When they were satisfied, they let Lyle set out to find and board the World Train. Meanwhile, his friends started making up stories in case Lyle's school or parents came and asked them about him ...

Skills:
» Magic: allows him to detect when a machine isn't working properly, and gives him a very good intuition when it comes to the workings of mechanical and electronic devices, which nurtures his talent of--
» --Fixing and making things: of mechanical/electronic nature
» Stealth and agility: excellent at sneaking into places where he shouldn't be and running away when caught
» Oversensitive sense of smell: can distinguish the slightest of smells from the others
» Understanding Leonce's words

Weaknesses:
» Oversensitive sense of smell: gets thrown off by a new smell, especially if it is strong
» Short-minded: comes off as reckless and quietly optimistic
» Machines >>> Others: has more patience for machines than for living beings (unless it's a living machine, perhaps)
» Impulsive: when it comes to machines and electronic devices, he might sneak away a stranger's unfamiliar device to obsess over (he'll give it back in the end, but ...) (not just machines/electronic-related things, as it turns out)
» Emotionally disconnected: cannot quite tell, let alone understand, the nuances of emotions (his own included) as if there's a disconnect between the part that processes emotions and the rest of his brain

Weapons:
» "Book": An A5-book-sized robot that can fly, walk, climb, slide/skate, and shoot metal balls or anything else Lyle gives it as ammunition.
» "Ball": A tennis-ball-sized, well, ball, capable of electrocution.
» Smooth, long legs of pure shota

Items:
» Ajax's old leather jacket, given to Lyle for his (fifteenth) birthday present
» Messenger bag, not pictured here but can be seen on Lyle's old app
» Boots and socks
» Black short shorts
» At least a box of medical masks at all times
» A few changes of underwear and no other clothes (he wears green y-fronts and white sleeveless undershirt)
» Various metalworking and mechanic tools

Likes:
» Machinery and electronics; technology in general
» Taking things apart and putting them back together to figure them out, which sadly can't be applied to humans and other living beings
» Scrap metals, broken things
» Wandering around/exploring, freedom
» Running
» Coffee (without cream or milk)
» The breeze on his thighs (hence the fondness for shorts)

Dislikes:
» Any kind of strong smell/any assault to his sense of smell
» Being ordered around, being forced to do something
» "Propriety"
» Being cornered into a situation he can't run from
» Taking off his mask; he just talks with it on
» Porn
» Dick

Miscellaneous Facts:
» With the cap and mask, it is difficult to see his facial expressions; some of his friends joke that having them off doesn't make much of a difference.
» Doesn't understand fashion; dress him yourself if you want him to look fancy--when he tries to follow fashion trends, he ends up looking like a disaster.
» Cannot stay still; at the very least, his hands have to fiddle with something (hence the oversized T-shirt--he plays with the sleeves when he has to sit or stand still).
» Related to the point above: is a very hands-on person; he learns best from touch and practice, has difficulty gaining knowledge through mere sight and/or sound.
» Were he to wake up with breasts and a vagina (without a penis), he would go about his day just as usual (albeit with a bit of extra confusion) after the obligatory panic over the suddenness of the thing--he'd freak out over a period happening, though, mostly because he'd have zero idea of what to do about it.
» Level 50 Lyle is Skynet. Or Big Brother. Or basically all evil entity that watches everything and everyone and can control machines and technology to plunge the world into chaos.

Relationships (under construction):
» Ajax: adoptive father-slash-mentor
» Nona: big sister
» Leonce: annoying cat he's grown attached to/love-hate
» Ospire: "Stop calling me Shorty."
» Jayce: brother/rival in getting Ajax's attention
» Richard: annoying dick who likes sex too much and needs to shut up about porn
» Keira: becoming big sister after that offer of "Call out my name and I'll come help."
» Hotaru: seems cool enough of a person(/demon)
» Aya: COOL and silly, probably the only one who can get Lyle to participate in ridiculous adventures
» Daliya: thinks she is too panicky

RP Sample:

Lyle wrapped a clean handkerchief around the key (the owner was nice, but many old car collectors hated even the slightest of smudge on their cars, including the keys, and he didn't want to chance it) and turned it in ignition. The engine started, weak but sure. He and everyone else in the warehouse listened to the car humming for a while, and once they were certain it wouldn't die out again their simultaneous smiles lighted up the whole place. Figuratively, of course. Shiny white teeth were rare among the mechanics.

"You did manage to repair it!" Matt whistled in awe, adding to the general excitement at Lyle's success. "That thing's ancient, and the needed parts haven't been in the market for at least a decade!"

Pulling up (yes, up, the smell of oil could be quite annoying) his mask, Lyle revealed a wide grin behind it. "Yeah, but I know where to look. And, well, my 'thing'. Besides," he averted his eyes for a moment before looking back up, "you can fix an older, more broken-down car. I'm still nothing."

"I've been doing this for years. This is, what, your second year here? Yet you've learned much more than most of them," indignant shouts rose from all over the warehouse, "do in the same amount of time." Matt chuckled. "This 'thing' of yours, it's like magic."

It was just a throwaway comment, not meant to be taken seriously, but Lyle's mind latched onto it and refused to let go. Magic. Put that into the equation, and then everything made perfect sense. Why could no one explain how he could feel it when a machine'd got something wrong with it, why did no one else seem to experience it ...

... Bloody hell.

I am sorry that is really the only way I know how to RP-- /hides in shame
